Beatrix potter stories5/21/2023 ![]() He was determined to make a success of the book and developed a good working relationship with Beatrix as they pored over the individual details of the book. However, Norman proved to be a good choice. The Warnes did not have much hope it would sell many copies they actually gave the project to their youngest brother, Norman, as a kind of test for his first project. were so impressed they decided to take a chance on the budding author, now 36 years old. She struggled initially to find a publisher, and instead privately printed her first two books ‘The Tale of Peter Rabbit’ (1901) and ‘ The Tailor of Gloucester’ (1902), experimenting with new colour printing processes and managing every aspect of the books’ production. The first rare Beatrix Potter book to solely feature illustrations by her is the ‘The Happy Pair’ (c.1890), which alongside many of her more ephemeral illustrated pieces from that time are highly sought after and can fetch in excess of £15,000 in good original condition.Įncouraged by the reception her hand-done ‘picture-letters’ had received from the young recipients, Beatrix Potter turned her hand to writing & illustrating her own children’s books. She was fascinated by natural history and would spend many hours drawing wildlife such as fungi and flowers, before turning her hand to illustration for children’s books published by Nister & Dutton, wherein prototypes for many of the characters from Peter Rabbit & Friends can be found, including Jeremy Fisher (‘A Frog he would a fishing Go’, Nister’s Holiday Annual 1896). To make up for the lack of company she began to sketch and make up stories about her pet rabbits and her parents seeing her talent paid for art lessons. In addition to producing some great art for our children to enjoy, she seems to have led a life worth their attention as well.View the first edition children's books by Beatrix Potter available at Shapero.īorn during the Victorian era to wealthy and well-connected parents, English children’s author and illustrator, botanist and conservationist Beatrix Potter led a largely solitary childhood. ![]() She left almost all of her land holdings to the National Trust, preserving much of the land that now makes up the Lake District National Park. In her personal life, she was briefly engaged to be married in 1905, but her fiance died suddenly of leukemia. In addition to her talents as an author and land manager, Beatrix Potter showed an entrepreneurial streak and designed spin-off merchandise based on her stories. ![]() She studied and illustrated the reproduction of fungal spores, drawing microscopic spores for the benefit of the larger community and producing her own thesis on the process of mushroom reproduction.īeatrix Potter produced over twenty-three books writing and illustrating (and managing her farms) until failing eyesight made the tasks too difficult. She had access to accomplished botanist and mycological experts and after some brief mentoring she was engaged in her own substantial scientific mycological research. To my personal delight, her scientific interests centered on mycology (mycology = the study of mushrooms). Showing naturalist and scientific inclinations, she illustrated insects, fossils and mushrooms. It was the first of several land purchases she would make. Using the legacy from an aunt and the proceeds from the sales of Peter Rabbit, Beatrix Potter bought the Hill Top Farm in Near Sawrey in the English Lake District in 1905. The world of children’s literature would be much poorer if she had not moved beyond that first private publication, which was probably for the benefit of her large extended family. It was released publicly a year later as a three-colour illustrated book. The Tale of Peter Rabbit, was written, illustrated and published privately in 1901. From these advantages, Potter combined her artistic ability, rich imagination, and natural curiosity to leave us with a legacy of wonderful children’s tales. Beatrix was educated by a private governess until the age of 18 and also benefited from private art lessons. The children were indulged with numerous small animals and pets, which gave them the opportunity to observe the animals and draw them. ![]() Benefitting from the idyllic childhood she and her brother Walter spent summer holidays in Scotland and in the English Lake District. Performance probe5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() In the GT especially, you see it in the "angry face" front-end treatment, whose many air slots and sculpted chin spoiler echo the racetrack (even if the result is less pretty than on the base car). To distinguish its version, Ford went for a more aggressive, sports-oriented character. Which can't make life in the already-nasty two-plus-two coupe market any easier. Of course, as Ford and Mazda made the new Probe lighter, quicker, smoother, better composed, and nicer looking, the MX-6 twin was improving apace. Even so, this new GT weighed 2894 pounds, 66 pound less than the last GT we tested. Both the base Probe and the GT carry higher levels of standard equipment than did last year's models-including a new driver's air bag. As in other recent Mazda-engineered products (the MX-6, the RX-7, and the 626), overall mass was trimmed even as body rigidity and control of noise, vibration, and harshness were improved. The new Probe's handling-and every other facet of its performance-benefits from a weight reduction. Lows: Some excellent competitors have more sheer punch. It understeers safely if you muff a corner and otherwise changes direction cleanly and grips tenaciously. The car makes a benign partner in crime for strafing mountain roads. Coupled with the Probe's wider tires, this braking system delivers 176-foot stops from 70 mph. Power rack-and-pinion steering and the GT's standard disc brakes (the base four-cylinder car uses a disc/drum setup) feel precise and accurate, with light effort and smooth, positive action. However, the Probe's ride is considerably less supple on rough roads. A a result, the Probe comers with a flat, stuckdown cornering posture that delivers 0.86 g of roadholding compared to the Mazda's 0.85 g. The Probe's suspension calibration follows in this more aggressive vein with a thicker front anti-roll bar and markedly stiffer springs than the MX-6 uses. The MX-6, for example, roll on mere 205/55- 15s. Goodyear VR50 Gatorbacks in size 225/50-16 may not rival exoticar ' boots, but they tower over everything in this sporty-coupe class. And the Probe's 133-mph top speed is 4 mph faster than the MX-6's.Ĭredit the Probe's wider and taller tires for the improved performance. Its quarter-mile clocking of 15.5 seconds at 89 mph also edges out the MX-6's 15.6-second/88-mph performance. The Probe hit 60 mph in 7.0 seconds, 0.2 quicker than the MX-6. The new Probe GT's performance is a touch better than that of its stablemate, the Mazda MX-6 LS, all the way up the speed range. But its 164 horses (compared with a very conservative 145 for the previous turbo four) do a fine job propelling the car. It never generates the obvious kick of an abnormally aspirated engine, and the apparent flatness of its torque curve minimizes the sensations of acceleration. In marked contrast, the new six spins out a liquid stream of torque, whisking straight to its 7000-rpm ceiling in an easy rush. But it was a noisy, buzzy bugger, and it contributed to the twitchy full-throttle torque steer that grabbed and held adrenal glands better than it held a heading. Its 203 pound-feet of torque gave the previous Probe GT great mid-range thrust, and the car trounced all corners in street-start 5-to-60-mph acceleration and in the top-gear 50-to-70-mph roll on. ![]() We found in our April 1992 sports-coupe comparison that time and relentlessly rising standards had overtaken the 2.2-liter twelve-valve turbo motor. Highs: Sweet engine, friendly handling, serious tires. Dropping the cowl height a dramatic three inches and pulling the windshield base forward nearly four inches provided the canvas on which a lean, long, contemporary shape could be drawn. They started with a considerably bigger and more stable footprint by stretching the wheelbase almost four inches and pushing out the track, front and rear, more than two inches. Cowl height, suspension locations, wheelbase, track-the key mechanical-architecture cards had already been dealt before Ford walked into the room.įor the second-generation, 1993 models, however, Ford engineers were able to spec out the new platform the way they wanted it. All the "hard points" had to remain fixed in space. For their half of the joint sports-coupe project, they could only restyle the skin and fiddle with chassis tuning. Kelly and product development chief Neil Ressler explained that the first time around, they were handed an existing Mazda platform, that of the 626 sedan. Let’s get to it: Nuts So, now that we’ve had our quick safety talk and technical information, let’s talk about some fun ideas for making menorahs! These crafts all require very little in the way of buying or sourcing new materials or using any power tools. Adam Sandler made a solid attempt to rectify that in 1994, and, since then, a steady trickle of pop tunes has been added to the canon of Hanukkah music.
